Mangup Kale Cave City and Fortress.Mangup Middle Ages Kingdom.Mangup plateau.
The biggest "cave town" in Crimea is Mangup. It is situated in Sevastopol region - the territory of Big Sevastopol. Mangup is the capital of the powerful Principalities of the Middle age Taurida. It was named Theodoro and came into being probably in the sixth century AD.
There were cave casemates, temple-strong fortifications, the Price's castle and farmsteads, a temple-basilica of Saint Constantine and Helena. It is a grandiose monument of the former principality of Theodoro, the land of which stretched up to the sea shore.
During the reign of Prince Aleksey (1420-1456), who established friendly relations with Crimean Khanate, the Principality of Theodoro reached its prosperity and even had its own port.
In 1475 the Turks besieged Mangup, ruined the fortress and erected the castle. The historians believe that the last inhabitants left when Crimean joined up with Russia.
